Pouring into Growth: Bourbon Tourism’s Bright Future

At Advance Travel & Tourism, we’re always on the lookout for opportunities where travel, culture, and economic impact intersect — and the bourbon industry is offering one of the brightest stories of 2025.

Our team recently attended a state of the bourbon industry event that left us energized about the future. Despite some global headwinds, the outlook for bourbon — and the tourism that supports it — is incredibly strong, and Kentucky is poised to continue building on its $9 billion economic impact.

Bourbon’s Bright Future

The bourbon industry’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. Thanks to record visitor numbers in 2024, tourism remains a powerful marketing driver for distilleries large and small. In fact, 2025 is expected to bring even more innovation, with robotics and AI improving production and distribution capabilities behind the scenes.

At the same time, the bourbon sector is adapting to changes in international markets, strengthening direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales, and leveraging social media engagement more strategically than ever before. These secondary engines will help maintain the industry’s growth trajectory even amid supply chain challenges caused by tariffs.

A Shift from FY Planning to Long-Term Strategy

Tariffs continue to create uncertainty, but the industry’s response is creative and relationship-driven. Maintaining positive partnerships with historical international markets remains a priority, and there’s a noticeable shift toward long-term, future-focused planning rather than short-term fiscal year goals.

This aligns naturally with the bourbon industry’s deep connection to the futures market — where patience and a long-view approach are essential to success.

Bourbon Tourism: The Next Big Destination

Perhaps the most exciting takeaway from the event was the clear, deliberate emphasis on bourbon tourism. Industry leaders predict continued growth over the next 3–4 years, supported by new distilleries and immersive tasting room experiences popping up across the state.

Inspired by the success of Napa Valley’s wine tourism model, Kentucky is doubling down on the visitor experience. Thanks to local regulation changes, the number of dry counties has dropped dramatically — from 80 to just 2 — opening even more opportunities for tourism expansion in previously untapped regions.

Increased transportation options, elevated marketing efforts, and a growing network of smaller distilleries beyond the traditional Kentucky Bourbon Trail are all helping to drive visitation deeper into the state.

Social Media, AI, and the Human Element

While the bourbon industry is embracing the cost-effectiveness and direct reach of social media — and beginning to integrate AI for marketing efficiency — it’s clear that personal connections remain at the heart of bourbon branding.

Consumers crave the authentic, human stories behind each bottle, each distillery, and each tasting experience. As DTC channels grow with changing state laws, building and maintaining those human relationships will be key to sustainable marketing success.

Why Tourism Professionals Should Pay Attention

For travel marketers, bourbon’s intersection with tourism offers a golden opportunity. Tourism organizations, CVBs, and destination marketers should focus on supporting bourbon tourism now more than ever. Small and medium-sized distilleries located outside the traditional Bourbon Trail are increasingly important — and driving visitation to these locations can have a profound economic impact on local communities.

The positive sentiment we experienced at the event — coupled with strong industry connections we made, including a great conversation with Kentucky Distillers’ Association President Eric Gregory — left us confident: Bourbon tourism isn’t just booming; it’s becoming a cornerstone of Kentucky’s travel identity for the foreseeable future.

We’re ready to help destinations tap into this incredible momentum. Stay tuned for more insights and partnership opportunities — and raise a glass to the future of bourbon tourism!

Visibility used to follow a familiar pattern: search, rankings, clicks, visits. That structure is starting to shift. AI doesn’t just retrieve pages. It assembles responses. Instead of presenting a list of links, it’s interpreting information and building answers. That changes how destinations appear—and whether they appear at all. Being present online is no longer the only requirement.

Clarity is starting to play a different role. Not just in messaging—but in visibility. As AI systems interpret and assemble information, they favor content that’s easy to understand and easy to use. That creates a subtle shift.
